How to calculate water and sewer charges:

When calculating water and sewer charges, the first thing that needs to be determined is the size of the water meter at the location. The size of the water meter establishes the base water and sewer charge. The next important piece of information needed is the unit of measure for your particular meter, not all meters are the same. The last piece of information required is whether or not the location being serviced is residential or commercial. Each of these pieces of information are important to correctly calculate the water charge. If you are unsure, about the size of the meter, unit of measurement or whether your location is classified as residential or commercial, contact the Customer Service office at 317.571.2442.

Water and sewer charges are calculated differently. Water employs a method called step charging. In this method, there is usually a base charge and a usage charge. The usage charge is calculated per thousand (1,000) gallons or per hundred (100) cubic feet and changes over the usage.

Example: 1 inch meter, unit of measurement-gallons, usage10,000:

Base Charge           $16.78
First 9,000 gallons @ $2.76           $24.84
Next 1,000 gallons @ $3.66           $3.66
            $45.28

Example: 5/8” meter,  unit of measurement-cubic feet, usage-1,500:

Base Charge           $12.11
First 1,200 cubic feet @ $2.06           $24.72
Next 300 cubic feet @ $2.74           $8.22
            $45.05

Sewer usage is based upon water usage. Sewer usage is not step charged; it employs a simple base plus usage charge. The base charge is again based on the size of water meter, but the usage charge is fixed per either 1,000 gallons or 100 cubic feet.

Example: 1 inch meter, unit of measurement-gallons, usage-25,000.

Base Charge           $18.01
Usage 25,000 @ $4.22           $105.50
            $123.51
