Water Advisory Testing Update

Aug 12, 2025

Bacteriological testing samples were collected this morning, August 12th after the water outage event that occurred yesterday in western Carmel.  Testing results are expected to be received Wednesday, August 13th after 12:30pm.  This post will be updated once the results are known.

Water was restored quickly after a water outage affected an area in west Carmel which is bounded by the Hamilton County border to the west, 146th  Street to the north, 96th Street to the south and US 31 on the Northeast boundary and College Avenue on the Southeast boundary.  Please see the Map.

There is a boil advisory in that affected area.  Eastern Carmel was not affected by the outage and is not under a boil advisory.

Carmel Utilities never stopped disinfecting water during the event and all water distributed into the system was tested and monitored as usual.  A boil advisory must be issued per IDEM (Indiana Department of Environmental Management) when water main pressures drop below 20 psi.  That was the case in this situation.

Below is helpful information during a boil advisory

Here are some helpful guidelines regarding a boil advisory:
140°F is an effective temperature to kill most bacteria
Dishwashers – Per the National Sanitation Foundation, dishwashers are required to heat water to a minimum of 150°
Laundry – the temperature in washing machine can vary greatly, but most dryers are between 120°-160°
Showering is ok, as long as water is not consumed
Morning coffee – most coffee makers brew between 195°-205°F for optimal brew.  Keurig’s average is around 192° as a default.
