Water Advisory Update

Aug 12, 2025

Water has been restored to the affected area in west Carmel.  There is still a boil advisory in place for that affected area which is bounded by the Hamilton County border to the west, 146th Street to the north, 96th Street to the south and US 31 on the Northeast boundary and College Avenue on the Southeast boundary.  Please see the Map.  Eastern Carmel was not affected by the outage and is not under a boil advisory.
Please note this important information regarding the advisory:
Carmel Utilities never stopped disinfecting water during the event, all water sent into the system was of the same quality as normal
A boil advisory must be issued per IDEM (Indiana Department of Environmental Management) when water main pressures move below 20 psi.  That was the case in this situation

Here are some helpful guidelines regarding a boil advisory:

140°F is an effective temperature to kill most bacteria
Dishwashers – Per the National Sanitation Foundation, dishwashers are required to heat water to a minimum of 150°
Laundry – the temperature in washing machine can vary greatly, but most dryers are between 120°-160°
Showering is ok, as long as water is not consumed
Morning coffee – most coffee makers brew between 195°-205°F for optimal brew.  Keurig’s average is around 192° as a default.

Bacteriological testing samples are being collected this morning, August 12th with results expected 24 hours after submission to the lab. The Utility is constantly monitoring the disinfection process and will take all precautions in compliance with IDEM guidelines. Once the results are received, additional information will be posted to Carmel Utilities’ website

Carmel Utilities is continuing to aske that outdoor watering activity be limited to support system recovery.  If there are further questions, please contact Utility customer service at [email protected] or by calling 317-571-2442 (business hours 8am to 5pm
